I used size 4 medium weight yarn, size 5.00 mm hook.

Ch 6, join with a Sl st to form a ring. (I used a magic ring)

Rnd 1: Ch 3, work 2 dc in ring, (ch 1, 3 dc in ring) 3 times, ch 1, join with a sl st to top of ch-3.

Rnd 2: Sl st in next 2 dc, sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, [2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc] in same ch-1 sp (corner made), *ch 1, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc] in next ch-1 sp, rep from * twice, ch 1, join with a sl st  to top of ch-3 (4 corner).

Rnd 3: Sl st in next 2 dc, Sl st in next ch-1 corner sp, ch 3, [2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc] in same corner ch-1 sp, * ch 2, [1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc] in next ch-1 sp, (v-st made), ch 2**, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc] in next ch-1 sp, rep from * twice, rep from * to ** once, join with sl st to beg ch 3 (4 corners, 1 v stitch between each corner).

Rnd 4: Sl st in next 2 dc, Sl st in the next ch-1 corner sp, ch 3, [2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc] in same corner ch-1 sp, *ch 3, sk next ch-2 sp, [1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc] in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, sk next ch-2**, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc] in next ch-1 sp, rep from * twice, rep from * to ** once, join with a Sl st to beg ch 3 (4 corners, 1 V-st between each corner), fasten off.

Venetian star (Granny square)


Skill level: Intermediate 

I used medium weight yarn and a size G/6 - 4.25 mm crochet hook

Beginning popcorn (beg pc): Ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in sane st or sp, drop loop from hook, insert hook in the 3rd ch of beg ch-3, pick up the dropped loop and draw through.

Popcorn (pc): Work 5 dc in same st or sp, drop loop from hook, insert hook in the first of the 5 dc just made, pick up dropped loop and draw through. 

Ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring. (I used a magic ring)

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3 (12 dc)

Rnd 2: Beg pc in first st, (ch 1, pc) in each of the next 2 dc, *ch 5, (1 pc, ch 1) in each of next 2 dc, 1 pc in next dc, rep from *twice, ch 5, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. 

Rnd 3: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, beg pc in first sp, ch 1, 1 pc in next ch-1 sp, *ch 2, 5 dc in next ch-5 sp, ch 2 **, 1 pc in next ch-1 sp,ch 1, 1 pc in next ch-1 sp, rep from * twice, rep from * to ** once, join with a Sl st in 3rd ch beg ch-3.

Rnd 4: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, beg pc in first sp, * ch 3, sk next ch-2 sp, (1 dc, ch 1) in each of next 2 dc, (1 dc, ch1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in next dc, (ch 1,1 dc) in each of next 2 dc, ch 3, sk next ch-2 sp**, 1 pc in next ch-1 sp, rep from * twice, rep from * to ** once, join with a sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3.

Rnd 5: Ch 3, *3 dc, next ch-3 sp, [1 dc, in the next dc, 1 dc in next ch-1 sp] 3 times, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next dc (corner),[1 dc in next ch-1 sp,1 dc in next dc] 3 times, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp**, dc in next pc, rep from * twice, rep from * to ** once, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, starting in same st, 1 sc in each of next 12 dc, *(2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in next ch-3 sp (corner) ** , 1 sc in each of next 23 dc, rep from * twice, rep from * to ** once, 1 sc in each of next  11 dc, join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off.  Sew in ends.

Medium weight yarn (4)

Ch - chain
sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet

Pattern: ( with any color )
Ch 4; join with slip stitch to form ring. 
Rnd 1 (right side): Ch 2 (does not count as dc now and throughout), 12 dc in ring; join with slip st to first dc.

Note: mark rnd 1 as right side.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, do not turn; 2 dc in same st as joining and in each dc around; join with slip st to first dc: 24 dc.

Rnd 3: Ch 2, dc in same st as joining, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc) around; join with slip st to first dc: 36 dc.

Rnd 4: Ch 2, dc in same st as joining and in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, ( dc in next 3 dc, 2 dcin next dc) around; join with slip st to first dc: 45 dc.

Rnd 5: Ch 2, dc in same st as joining and in each dc around; join with slip st to first dc.

Repeat Rnd 5, 7 times

Edging: ch 1, sc in same st as joining and in each dc around; join with slop st to first sc, finish off.
